Neretva

Congress Room 4 – named after the River Neretva

The Neretva is the longest river on the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, flowing for 230 km, mostly through Bosnia and Herzegovina, before reaching the sea in Croatia. Known for its stunning emerald-green color and icy waters, it is often described as the coldest river in the world, with a source located high under Mount Jabuka (eng. Mountain Apple) at 1,227 meters above sea level.

Once fully drinkable from source to mouth, the Neretva still remains remarkably clear in its upper stretches, despite growing pollution threats today. Historically, it was known to the ancient Greeks as Narenta, and the Illyrian tribe Narensi once settled along its banks.

In medieval times, a shipyard operated along the river near present-day Počitelj. Due to its life-giving importance, many refer to it as the “Nile of Herzegovina.”

One of the most iconic landmarks on the Neretva is the Old Bridge in Mostar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a masterpiece of 16th-century Ottoman architecture. The bridge stands as a symbol of unity and resilience, arching gracefully over the cold, swift waters of the river.
